Why Teachers Love Snow Days (As Much As Their Students)

  1. Sleeping in – Look, I know we’re grown-ups and we’re supposed to be early risers. I get it. But do you know how great it feels to wake up when it’s actually light out? Every once in a while? Let me tell you, it’s heaven.
  2. Solitude – The thing about teaching is that you are ALWAYS around other people – kids, other teachers – and that’s great. But sometimes it’s nice to have some time alone, to recharge from the strains that being with so many other people can put on you.
  3. Taking breaks on your own time – As a teacher, you have a regulated schedule. You have to figure out exactly when you can get work done, when you can eat, when you can use the bathroom even. It’s nice to get to do that whenever you choose, rather than on a schedule.
  4. TIME – This is the biggest one. Teaching takes up the grand majority of my day. When I get home, I’m usually too tired to do much else. So on my snow days? I catch up. I set aside time for me. I read, I watch movies. It’s nice to have hours to do whatever I want and whatever I need.
