So I’m busy watching Roman Holiday right now, which, if you didn’t know, is currently in the works as a Broadway musical. Brief Encounter, Sunset Boulevard, and many other Hollywood classics have found their way onto the Broadway stage. So it got me thinking. What old Hollywood films would I like to see as Broadway musicals? Here are just a few…
- It’s a Wonderful Life – I believe this one has been adapted into plays about a thousand times over, but it is my all-time favorite old film. It’s a beautiful story about the most wonderful time of the year. I can only imagine how sweet (and maybe a little haunting) a musical would be.
- Some Like It Hot – This movie was my first introduction to Marilyn Monroe. And I love everything about this movie. (In fact, I think I might need to watch it again soon.) Can you imagine the jazz music? The dance numbers? Megan Hilty as Marilyn Monroe? (Cliched but so perfect.)
- Double Indemnity – One of my favorite obscure musicals, Murder Ballad, was a take-off on modern noir. One of my favorite noir films is Double Indemnity. It would make the perfect dark musical, with a couple of star-making parts for some Broadway singers in the leads.
- Casablanca – This one already has the perfect song to be its recurring theme. It’s got everything. Music, intrigue, passion, exotic locations, beautiful leads, Nazis. It’s already a stunning film. On the stage? It would be breathtaking.
