I’m chaperoning my first major field trip this weekend. Me and a whole bunch of 7th graders. As excited as I am, I’m a little nervous as well. And since I tend to think in worst case scenarios, here are some of the things that I am worrying about:

I’m a teacher in my day-job, and just like the students, we teachers get pretty darn excited about summer break. Here are a few of the reasons I’m excited about the upcoming break.

Or some of them, anyway. I’ve been listening to The Handmaid’s Tale on audiobook lately, and it’s gotten me thinking about dystopian novels. They’ve been around for a while, but there is definitely a trend, especially in YA, as of late. And it doesn’t surprise me, with all of the uncertainty going around in the world. So this has gotten me thinking about my own favorite dystopian novels and series, from past and present. So I present to you just a few of them.
Because we all need a little happy right now…
If you don’t know, I am a history teacher by day. In order to be an effective history teacher, I think, you have to be a complete history nerd. You have to find history so exciting that you want to share it with others. And I do. I LOVE history. Recently, I have figured out that I love researching powerful families, monarchs and influential people. I like their quirks and their flaws. I like examining who the people in the family were underneath it all. And so, without further ado, I present to you some of my favorite historical families of power.
In my viewing chronological order…
With the release of Jackie coming up (and the hopes that I am going to post my story about a First Lady to Wattpad soon), this history nerd is rating her favorite First Ladies of all time. I’ve been actively reading everything that I can get my hands on about the First Ladies since I was about nine years old. I think it’s fascinating, these women who have so much quiet power while standing behind their husbands. I like to look at what they accomplished, how they lived their lives. A lot of them really were extraordinary women.
‘Tis the season! Time for hot chocolate and holiday songs (no hot chocolate here, too warm, though we had several snow days last week). I’m one of those purists that refuses to listen Christmas songs until Thanksgiving has passed. Now, I’m listening to it constantly while I’m decorating. This year, my song of choice has been “Baby It’s Cold Outside” (probably not least because it’s used in my current work-in-progress novel). I never really liked the song til recently. It’s overdone with just a hint of creepy. But how can I resist something so catchy and 40s-sounding? Plus, as I found out while researching this post, it’s written by the one and only Frank Loesser, he of Guys and Dolls fame. So of course I have to love it.
I’ve been listening to a lot of versions of the song lately, and here I’ve compiled my top three.
My friends all make fun of me because I am the nerd who likes Thanksgiving best out of all of the holidays. I’m told that I should like Christmas or Halloween: there’s more to do, more celebration, but I like that there’s less hubbub around Thanksgiving. Maybe I like being a little different.
